Weekend protest in Hernando opposes Trump policies

April 21, 2025 – About 50 protesters spent 90 minutes on Saturday, April 19 in front of the Hernando offices for U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Trent Kelly protesting policies of President Donald Trump.

Starting at 2 p.m., the protest, done in conjunction with other events being held around the country, saw the protesters hold signs and chant during the time they spent, saying they don’t approve of what they called “the dismantling of our government.”

At the protest, those participating commented on the purpose for taking part.

“The Trump administration is poised to destroy our economy with their extreme tariffs,” said protestor Mark Whitehead.

“I am motivated by a sense of urgency to save our Democracy and defend our freedoms,” said Ellie Haimsohn. “We must stand for our core beliefs before they are taken away.”

“My husband and I felt impelled to participate in this rally because we don’t want to lose our rights to freedom of speech and freedom to petition our representatives for relief from a would-be autocrat,” said Susan Watkins.

Among the signs that were held by demonstrators were those encouraging cars to “Honk for Democracy,” “We Stand with Ukraine, not Putin,” and “Hate Will Not Make Us Great.”
