Southaven Veterans Day Luncheon Set for Nov. 11

Southaven will honor local veterans next month with its annual free luncheon. The Southaven Veterans Day luncheon is set for Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Southaven Community Safe Room, 7312 Highway 51 North. Mayor Darren Musselwhite and the City of Southaven are hosting the event. Seating is by reservation, so the city is asking guests to call ahead.

Southaven Veterans Day Luncheon Guest Speaker

This year’s guest speaker will be retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel John P. Sullivan Jr., according to the city’s announcement. The program will also include entertainment and door prizes.

The city’s flyer carries the “America 250” anniversary emblem, a nod to the nation’s 250th birthday year. That gives this year’s observance an extra patriotic theme.

Honoring DeSoto County Veterans

Veterans Day falls on Nov. 11 each year. It honors everyone who has served in the U.S. armed forces, in war and in peace. The date marks the armistice that ended fighting in World War I in 1918. Because it is a federal holiday, post offices, federal offices, and many banks will be closed that Wednesday. Residents planning other errands that day should check hours before they go.

DeSoto County is home to thousands of veterans. Cities and civic groups across the county hold their own events each fall, and Southaven’s luncheon is one of the city’s yearly traditions. Residents who know a veteran who might not see the announcement are encouraged to share the details and help them reserve a seat. Space depends on reservations, so calling sooner rather than later is the safest bet.
