Southaven to Build Indoor Tennis Facility as Part of Expansion
Southaven is moving forward with plans to build its first indoor tennis facility, according to a recent city blog post by Mayor Musselwhite. The project aims to expand the city’s tennis offerings and attract regional tournaments.
The city hired UrbanArch Associates to design the new facility, which will be located on a 10-acre site adjacent to the current Snowden Grove Tennis Complex. The site will extend northward to include the existing pro shop, with plans for eight to 10 new courts, central offices, a pro shop, concessions, locker rooms, and an elevated spectator area.
Construction is expected to begin once design and bidding processes are completed, likely in early 2027. The project will include scalable features to allow for future expansion of courts, according to city officials.
This indoor tennis facility is part of a broader initiative that began in 2016, when Southaven incorporated tennis into its Parks and Recreation program and appointed Michael Johnson as the first director of tennis. The city completed two phases of outdoor court expansion, adding 16 courts with pavilions, along with a converted pro shop in the old Moose Lodge building.
Southaven’s tennis program has been recognized as the best in Mississippi by USTA-Mississippi in 2024. The addition of indoor courts, combined with the existing outdoor courts, is expected to position the complex among the top facilities in Mississippi and the Mid-South, capable of hosting major regional and professional tournaments.
Mayor Musselwhite emphasized that tennis offers lifelong benefits and contributes significantly to tourism, economic growth, and community health. The new indoor facility aims to serve players of all ages and support youth development while providing economic benefits for the city.
