Southaven plans Getwell trail extension beginning in spring 2027

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 on an extension of Southaven’s multi-use trail along Getwell from Central Parkway to Church Road, the City of Southaven said. The 10-foot pedestrian trail will run along the west side of Getwell and connect with a prior project.

The city recently completed right-of-way easement acquisition for the project, which is funded through the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The funding provides federal transportation money for pedestrian projects and covers 80% of the trail, according to the city.

The project is expected to cost about $800,000 after bidding in November. Completion is projected for July 2027.

The extension is intended to improve safety for DeSoto Central students and lengthen what the city describes as the longest pedestrian trail in DeSoto County. The existing route connects Airways to Malone through Central and Snowden Grove parks and continues south along Getwell.

The city said additional trail extensions are included in its comprehensive plan, including routes from Central Parkway to Nail, from Church Road to Star Landing, and from Rasco to Highway 51 between Canterbury and Dorchester. Those projects are pending funding.
