The Southaven Mayor’s Youth Council met with the mayor and city department heads for lunch and a question-and-answer session on Wednesday, according to the City of Southaven. The event included prepared questions and a lightning round.
Students asked about city infrastructure, municipal expenses and revenue, taxes, data centers and the challenges departments face while serving the city’s growing community. The discussion also gave them a behind-the-scenes look at how city departments work together to plan, develop and maintain services and amenities used by residents.
The city provided an example involving multi-use pedestrian trails. Planning and Development designs the trails, after which responsibility moves to Parks and Recreation when a trail intersects park property. Otherwise, the trails are handed off to Public Works for ongoing maintenance.
