Walking into Vampire Penguin in Silo Square Saturday afternoon, a young five-year-old boy learned that he would be taking a trip of a lifetime, fulfilling a dream come true.

Thanks to Make-A-Wish Mid-South and Silo Square the young boy identified only as “Wish Kid Danny” discovered that he and his family would be leaving Jan. 15 for Disney World.

The discovery destination at Vampire Penguin for Danny and his family came after a scavenger hunt of Silo Square businesses, leading to its final destination.

According to its website, Make-A-Wish partners with “tens of thousands of volunteers, donors and supporters to advance the Make-A-Wish® vision to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a critical illness.”

Danny’s trip is happening as a result of Silo Square’s second annual Cars for a Cause classic car show, held last September. The show helped raise $8,000 to grant Danny’s wish and because of that, Silo Square was able to host Saturday’s wish reveal celebration.

“There’s nothing better than seeing a kid like Danny walk through the door with such surprise,” said Lydia Miller, Make-A-Wish Development Specialist. “Apparently he had just asked about going to Disney World this morning and he didn’t realize this was happening.”

SILO SQUARE DEVELOPMENT FILLING UP: Silo Square developer Brian Hill confirmed Saturday that with the addition of Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, the development is basically sold out.

Firebirds, a restaurant that also has a location in Collierville’s Carriage Crossing, received design review approval during the most recent Southaven Board of Aldermen meeting. It is taking the spot where Silo Social was to locate, but has since chosen not to build there.

Firebirds is part of a national chain of restaurants. The Silo Square location would be its first venture in Mississippi.

When that location is completed, the development alongside Getwell Road near Snowden Grove Park and the BankPlus Amphitheater, will have been completed, Hill said. About eight sites remain to be finished and they are either in the early stages of construction or are being constructed.
