Shooting rampage leaves multiple vehicles hit, one dead located in Hernando

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — One person is dead following an early morning shooting incident Monday along Interstate 55 that stretched from Memphis into DeSoto County, according to the Southaven Police Department.

Authorities said dispatchers received a 911 call around 6 a.m. reporting gunfire on southbound I-55 near Stateline Road. Investigators said multiple vehicles were struck by gunfire as they traveled along the interstate in Memphis and into Southaven.

Police said at least three vehicles were hit during the incident.

According to Major Eric Ainsworth with the Southaven Police Department’s Investigative Services and Training Division, the suspected shooter continued driving south on I-55 before reaching Hernando. There, officers with the Hernando Police Department located the suspect’s vehicle wrecked in the median.

The suspect was found inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe the wound was self-inflicted.

Earlier reports indicated that officers initially responded to gunfire involving vehicles along the interstate, which caused heavy traffic backups for miles as authorities worked the scene.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as agencies work to determine the full sequence of events and identify all individuals involved.

Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
