Panola County to hold Joe Cosby Memorial Mile Gear Walk Wednesday

Panola County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Batesville police and other law enforcement officers will hold the Joe Cosby Memorial Mile Gear Walk Wednesday, beginning at the gravesite in Magnolia Cemetery and ending at the Batesville Courthouse on the Public Square, the Panola County Sheriff’s Office said.

The flag at the graveside will be lowered to half-staff beginning at 8:30 a.m. Participants will then travel down Eureka Street to the courthouse, where the flag there also will be lowered to half-staff.

Traffic will be momentarily paused at the intersections of Perkins Lane and Eureka Street and Mississippi Highway 6 and Eureka Street as participants cross.

Cosby was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 30, 1988, while transporting a prisoner to court. The sheriff’s office said his death sent shockwaves throughout the county and beyond and that he will always be remembered and honored.
