March 17, 2025 – The City of Hernando Fire Department Monday announced that a new ambulance, Hernando Unit 1, went into service this morning at Station 1. With the growth of the city, the department is growing as well to better serve citizens. Fire officials were thankful for the support of Mayor Chip Johnson and the Board of Aldermen, Chief Marshel Berry and Deputy Chief Sam Witt for making this possible.

Hernando now has three ALS ambulances serving our citizens with Units 2 and 3 being located at stations 2 and 3 respectively in addition to Unit 1 at Station 1.

In November 2023, the Hernando Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of a third ambulance to enhance the city’s emergency medical services. This decision was made to accommodate the city’s growth and improve response times.

“I appreciate the leadership of Joanna Herring, Hernando EMS Director along with Chief Berry and Deputy Chief Witt,” said Mayor Chip Johnson. “The Board of Aldermen have been working with me to carefully execute this plan over the last three budget years. We had to build a space to house this ambulance, purchase the ambulance, outfit the ambulance with specialized equipment, and hire medics to staff these important positions. Teamwork has gotten us to this important milestone and now Hernando has three ambulances, staffed and ready to serve our citizens.”
