MDOT makes progress on north Mississippi projects, including DeSoto County
April 16, 2025 – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced several construction and maintenance project updates in north Mississippi.
U.S. 51/Turman Dr. intersection improvements in DeSoto County
Work is nearing completion for the intersection improvements at U.S. 51 and Turman Dr. in Southaven.The contractor is currently waiting for asphalt to resume production to complete the final lift of pavement. Once paving operations are complete the new traffic signals can be made active.
The $1.2 million contract was awarded to J.M. Duncan Inc. of Ripley. Work is expected to be complete in spring 2025.
Bridge replacement on State Route 35 in Attala County
A project to replace a bridge on State Route 35 just north of Kosciusko in Attala County was recently completed. The contractor has completed all work and is waiting for the growth of grass for final inspection.
The $6.5 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake.
Bridge replacements on State Route 9 in Calhoun County
Work is progressing on the replacement of four bridges on State Route 9 south of Calhoun City in Calhoun County. At Site 1, the contractor has finished constructing two box culverts and one bridge deck. At Site 2, the contractor has finished the bridge deck construction. Earthwork operations are anticipated to resume as soon as the weather permits for both sites.
The $24 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Little Rock, Ark., and work is expected to be complete in summer 2025.
Bridge replacements on State Route 8 in Calhoun and Grenada counties
A project to construct six bridges on State Route 8 in Calhoun and Grenada counties was recently completed. In Grenada County, traffic has been swapped onto the newly constructed roadway. The contractor has completed all work and is waiting for grass to be established for final acceptance.
The $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc. of Columbia.
Bridge replacements on State Route 442 in Leflore County
Work is progressing on the replacement of five bridges on State Route 442 in Leflore County.
Bridge construction is complete on all five sites. Aspahlt paving operations have begun, and Site 3 remains closed until the paving is complete.
The $12.4 million contract was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. of Nesbit. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2025.
Roundabout construction on U.S. 51 at Main Street in Senatobia
Work is progressing on a new roundabout in Tate County. The contractor has almost completed all the curb, gutter and island pavement. Asphalt paving operations will begin when weather conditions allow. The contractor closed the intersection on July 8 to complete the work.
The roundabout is expected to be opened to traffic later this month. There will be minor traffic interruptions and closures to complete construction, but they will be temporary.
The $2.9 million contract was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2025.
U.S. 51 bridge replacement in Yalobusha County
A project to replace four bridges along U.S. 51 is underway in Yalobusha County. The detour bridges at Site 1 and 2 have been completed and earthwork operations for the detour roads will resume when weather conditions allow.
The $20.1 million project was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co., Inc. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2026.
U.S. 51 bridge replacement over the Yocona River in Yalobusha County
Work has started on the replacement of a bridge on U.S. 51 over the Yocona River in Yalobusha County.
The bridge foundations have been completed on the south side of the river, and the contractor is moving equipment to the north side of the river to complete the foundations there. Earthwork operations are still ongoing when weather conditions allow.
Century Construction of Tupelo has been awarded the $12.2 million contract. It is anticipated that work will be complete by spring 2026.
Roundabout construction at State Route 7 and University Avenue in Oxford
A project is underway to construct roundabouts at the State Route 7 ramps and University Ave. in Lafayette County.
The contractor currently has all four interchange ramps closed to work on the drainage, curb and gutter, and asphalt paving in these areas. The interchange ramps are scheduled to reopen to traffic in late April, and work will continue in other areas of the project.
The $4.9 million contract was awarded to Cook & Son, LLC. of Smithville. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2026.
U.S. 51 bridge replacement in Carroll County
Progress is being made on a project to replace five bridges along U.S. 51 in Carroll County. Construction is ongoing on four bridges with two concrete bridge decks complete. Roadway embankment has begun on the site of the fifth bridge, and construction will start on the bridge at this site as crews finish work on the other bridges.
The $15.9 project was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2026.
