North Mississippi MDOT projects updated

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has provided updates on several construction projects in north Mississippi, including one project in DeSoto County.

“As we continue to chip away at our list, our list continues to grow,” said Commissioner John Caldwell, Northern Transportation District. “The cycle of maintenance on our roads and bridges requires constant attention and lots of money. I am very grateful for all of the legislative efforts that have helped us thus far. It makes a difference.”

“These projects are vital to our communities in northwest Mississippi, and they wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous level of support we receive from our state legislature and executive branch,” said Mitch Turner, District 2 Engineer.

Here’s the latest information provided by MDOT about road projects in north Mississippi:

Traffic signal improvements at State Route 302 and Braybourne Main in DeSoto County

Work is underway on the traffic signal improvements on State Route 302 at Braybourne Main in DeSoto County. Construction of the new intersection is complete. The red lights at Braybourne Main have been installed and the 30 day burn-in period will begin December 5.

The $4.6 million project was awarded to Century Construction Group, Inc. of Tupelo, and work is expected to be completed in spring 2024.

Bridge replacement on State Route 35 in Attala County

A project is underway to replace a bridge on State Route 35 just north of Kosciusko in Attala County. The contractor has nearly completed constructing both detour bridges and is in the process of paving the detour road.

The $6.5 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake and is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

Bridge replacements on State Route 8 in Calhoun and Grenada Counties

A project to replace four bridges on State Route 8 over Butputter creek is underway in Calhoun and Grenada Counties. In Grenada County, beams have been placed for Bridge A, and borrow is being placed. In Calhoun County, all bridge decks have been constructed, and the contractor is building the bridge end pavements. Borrow is being placed and is nearly to finish grade.

The $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc. of Columbia and is expected to be completed in fall 2024.

Bridge replacements on State Route 9 in Calhoun County

Work is progressing on the replacement of four bridges on State Route 9 south of Calhoun City in Calhoun County. At site 1, the contractor is in the process of constructing one of the box culverts and Bridge A. At site 2, the contractor is in the process of driving piling for Bridge B and has placed temporary grassing on most of the site.

The $24 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Little Rock, Ark., and work is expected to be completed in spring 2024.

Bridge replacements on State Route 6 in Quitman County

A project to replace two bridges on State Route 6 in Marks is underway. The two bridges are over Cassidy Bayou (Bridge A) and Coldwater River (Bridge B). The contractor has completed construction of Bridge B and paved the east end of the project up to the binder lift. Work continues on Bridge A. The contractor intends to swap traffic onto the new alignment on the east end of the project and Bridge B in November.

W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company of Jackson was awarded the $29.8 million contract. Construction is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

Mill and overlay on State Route 14 in Attala County

A project to mill and overlay State Route 14 from State Route 35 to State Route 19 in Attala County is nearing completion. All items have been completed except for final striping.

The $2.5 million contract was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. of Brookhaven. Work is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

Mill and overlay on State Route 309 in Marshall County

A project to mill and overlay State Route 309 from the end of the 4-lane north of State Route 78 is nearing completion in Marshall County. Asphalt and striping is complete. The contractor is waiting on an electrical cabinet to be delivered to the site in December.

The $4.8 million contract was awarded to Standard Construction Company, Inc. of Byhalia, and work is expected to be completed in spring 2024.

Mill and overlay on I-55 in Panola County

A project to mill and overlay 13 miles of I-55 from 1.8 miles north of State Route 35 to the Tate County line is underway in Panola County. Mainline SMA (stone matrix asphalt ) paving on the southbound lanes and base lift of SMA on the northbound lanes is complete. Work is now being done on the surface SMA lift in the Northbound lanes.

The $28.3 million project was awarded to Lehman-Roberts Company, and work is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

Roundabout construction at U.S. 72 and State Route 7 in Benton County

Work is progressing on the construction of a roundabout at the U.S. 72 and State Route 7 intersection in Benton County. Traffic has been shifted to the Traffic Control Phase 2A.

The $7.8 million project was awarded to Xcavators, Inc. of Falkner, and work is expected to be completed in summer 2024.
