Horn Lake Man Charged in Oxford Shooting Incident at Booth’s Barbeque in Oxford

OXFORD – A late-night event at Booth’s Barbeque and Yard on South Lamar Boulevard escalated into a chaotic scene early Sunday, Aug. 31, as police responded to large crowds, traffic congestion, and gunfire.

The Oxford Police Department reported that at the height of the disturbance, about 20 officers were needed to control traffic, pedestrians, and crowd safety in the area. Officers made 42 traffic stops and recovered more than 10 firearms during the incident.

At 12:47 a.m., shots were fired outside the business. No one was injured, and police quickly secured the scene. Antwan Terrell Tompkins, 19, of Tupelo, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. His bond will be set by the Municipal Court Judge.

Before the shooting, Dezreke Meyel Douglas, 20, of Horn Lake, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon at the event.

Event organizers – Tyler Bogan of Okolona, Keith Jackson of Greenville, and Brandon Lott of Oxford – were each cited for noise violations and inadequate security. Venue owner Josh Booth of Batesville was cited for multiple violations, including lack of security and safety planning.

Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen praised officers for running toward the gunfire and safely apprehending the suspect. “This dangerous situation could have had tragic consequences…we are extremely grateful for the swift actions and bravery of our officers,” McCutchen said.
