Horn Lake Police Offer Free Active Shooter Training

The Horn Lake Police Department has opened registration for two free safety classes for residents this fall, including Horn Lake active shooter training known as CRASE and a basic medical course for citizens. The department announced the classes on its official Facebook page Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. Seating is limited, and registration is open only to people who live in Horn Lake.

Horn Lake Active Shooter Training: Class Dates and Times

According to the flyer released by the police department, the two sessions are:

• Civilian Response to an Active Shooter Event (CRASE): Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Basic Medical for Citizens: Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The flyer lists the Horn Lake Police Department’s address, 3101 Goodman Road West, as the location. Residents who plan to attend should confirm the details when they sign up.

“Due to limited seating registration is limited to only Horn Lake Residents,” the department said in its post. Because space is limited, anyone interested should register early.

What Is CRASE?

CRASE is a civilian course created by the ALERRT Center at Texas State University, a national active-shooter training program used by many law enforcement agencies. The class teaches everyday people how to recognize danger and react during an attack. It is built around a simple approach known as “Avoid, Deny, Defend”: get away from the threat if you can, block or lock out the attacker if you can’t leave, and fight back only as a last resort.

Courses like this usually cover how attacks tend to unfold, what people can do in the first critical minutes before officers arrive, and what to expect when police reach the scene. The goal is to help residents make quick decisions at work, at school, at church, or while shopping.

Basic Medical Class Builds on the Training

The Nov. 5 Basic Medical for Citizens class is a natural follow-up. Emergency responders often say bystanders are the true first responders in the minutes after a serious injury. Knowing how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and provide basic aid can make a difference before paramedics arrive. Horn Lake police did not list specific topics for the medical session, so residents with questions can ask when they register.

Part of a Wider Push in DeSoto County

Horn Lake is not the only DeSoto County agency offering this kind of training. Southaven police have hosted free active-shooter workshops for the public, and local departments continue to add community programs such as crisis intervention training for officers. Classes like Horn Lake’s give residents a chance to meet the officers who serve their neighborhoods and to ask questions in a low-pressure setting.
