Hernando Phone Outage After Roundabout Crew Hits C Spire Line

A Hernando phone outage knocked out City of Hernando phone lines Tuesday after contractors working on an MDOT roundabout project accidentally struck a C Spire line, city officials said.

The damaged line is near Green T Road and U.S. Highway 51, where the Mississippi Department of Transportation roundabout is under construction, according to WMC Action News 5.

Hernando phone outage affects city offices and C Spire customers

The cut caused a widespread C Spire service outage across a large part of Hernando. City officials said city phone lines were not working as of midday Tuesday, Oct. 27. Crews are working to restore service, but no estimated time for repairs had been released.

What residents should know:

  • Emergencies: If you have an emergency, call 911. If your landline or C Spire service is down, try a cell phone on another carrier or go to the nearest police or fire station.
  • City business: Calls to City of Hernando offices may not go through until the line is repaired. Check the city’s website and official Facebook page for updates.
  • C Spire customers: Home and business customers in the affected area may lose phone or internet service until crews finish repairs.

Roundabout work at Green T Road and Highway 51

The MDOT roundabout project at Green T Road and Highway 51 is part of ongoing road improvements in Hernando. Drivers in the area should also watch for utility crews working near the intersection while repairs continue.

Tips during a phone outage

  • Keep a charged cell phone on hand and know which carrier it uses.
  • Write down important numbers, including your doctor, pharmacy and family contacts, in case you need to call from another phone.
  • Businesses that rely on landlines for credit card processing or alarm monitoring may want to check with their providers about backup options.
  • Do not approach damaged lines or utility equipment near the work zone. Leave repairs to C Spire and utility crews.

The outage comes a day after Olive Branch reported a separate problem with its non-emergency phone lines.

DeSoto County News will update this story when the city reports service has been restored. We may update this story as more information becomes available.
