DeSoto Supervisors to Weigh Rubbish Pit Fire, Cashless Plan
The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors will consider an emergency purchase tied to a fire at the county rubbish pit, a request to make the county rubbish facility cashless and new winter hours for the site when it meets Monday, Oct. 5, in Hernando. The draft agenda, posted Friday on the county’s website, also includes a drug court agreement with the City of Hernando and a long list of equipment bids.
The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the third-floor board room of the DeSoto County Administration Building, 365 Losher Street in Hernando. Planning items are set for 1 p.m. The agenda is a draft and can change at the board’s discretion.
Rubbish Facility Changes on the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors Agenda
Several items deal with the DeSoto County Rubbish Facility, where residents haul yard debris, construction waste and other bulky items. Supervisors are scheduled to take up:
- An emergency purchase related to a fire at the rubbish pit under the Solid Waste department
- A request from Waste Pro to go cashless at the county rubbish facility
- Approval of winter operating hours for the facility
- A request for an emergency purchase for the Southern Expansion Phase 4 at the rubbish site
The agenda does not include details on the fire or the proposed hours. Residents who pay cash at the facility may want to watch the outcome of the cashless request.
Drug Court Agreement and Other Business
Board attorney Adam Emerson is set to present a drug court interlocal agreement with the City of Hernando. Other notable items include:
- A report from Animal Services on results of the county’s Pets’ember event
- Budget amendments for the animal shelter, tax assessor, planning, the District Attorney’s victim-witness program and an Election Commission project
- A road department purchase of a John Deere 6M 125 cab tractor and two ice blades for a road grader
- Permission to advertise bids for a tri-axle heavy haul truck, a compact track loader and a tandem axle dump truck
- Bid awards for an HVAC adjustment at the Agri-Education Center, polypropylene pipe, crushed limestone and rip rap, and disaster debris removal assistance
- Change orders at the county’s crisis center and Emergency Operations Center projects
- A litter ordinance violation posting at a Dogwood Drive property
- An Adopt-a-Road request for Newell Road off Highway 301
Tax Insolvency List and Agri-Center Events
The meeting opens with Tax Collector Joey Treadway presenting the insolvency listing for tax year 2026. The consent agenda also includes a dozen event contracts at the DeSoto County Agri-Education Center, among them a DeSoto County Schools cross country race, a Jeepers for St. Jude event, a trunk-or-treat and DeSoto Hope’s “A Night of Hope.”
In the afternoon planning session, supervisors will review two minor subdivision requests: a one-lot split on Austin Road east of Tulane Road and a one-lot plat for Cedarview Baptist Church on Highway 305 north of Stewart Road.
Board meetings are open to the public, and the agenda includes time for citizen remarks.
