DeSoto Supervisors Keep Cash at Rubbish Pit, OK Expansion

Residents who pay cash at the DeSoto County rubbish pit can keep doing so. At their meeting Monday, Oct. 5, the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors rejected a request to make the county’s rubbish facility cashless. The board also approved a roughly 1.6-acre expansion of the site, the Daily Memphian reported.

Supervisors Reject Cashless Plan at DeSoto County Rubbish Pit

The request came from Waste Pro, which was listed on the board’s agenda as asking to stop taking cash at the county rubbish facility. Supervisor Jessie Medlin spoke against the change, arguing that going cashless would leave residents who don’t have credit cards with no place to dump their waste. The board voted the request down.

The rubbish pit is where county residents take items regular garbage service won’t pick up, such as storm debris, limbs and leaves, furniture, appliances and non-hazardous renovation debris. It does not accept household garbage, food containers or batteries.

Expansion Moves Forward Without Another Bid

Supervisors also approved expanding the site. The agenda listed the item as an emergency purchase for the “Southern Expansion Phase 4” at the rubbish site. According to the Daily Memphian, the board moved faster than usual to get the work started without going out for bids again, after earlier attempts to bid the project were unsuccessful.

The Oct. 5 agenda also included a separate emergency purchase tied to a fire at the rubbish pit and approval of winter operating hours. Details of the fire were not included in the agenda.
