UPDATE: Crash on interstate kills one, victim identified
The Mississippi Highway Patrol has identified the man killed in a wreck on I-269 near Red Banks Road on Friday, Oct 2.
The crash occurred shortly after 12 noon on the interstate near Red Banks Road. The Patrol said a 17-year-old from Tupelo was driving a 2017 Honda Civic south on I-269 about a mile north of Red Banks Road when he collided with a 1998 Toyota RAV4 driven by 26-year-old Christopher Anthony Christmas of Hernando, who was also driving south on the interstate.
Christmas died as a result of the crash. The Highway Patrol report indicated the teenage driver and passengers were not injured.
The interstate was closed as the accident scene was being processed and debris was being cleared away. Traffic remained backed up until after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon as crews were in the final stages of clearing the area.
The Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash.
