Accident closes southbound I-55 in Southaven

UPDATE: Southaven Police reported the roadway had been cleared and reopened to traffic about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

FOLLOWING IS THE ORIGINAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACCIDENT

It’s expected to be at Friday evening before traffic is allowed back on southbound I-55 after a late morning accident involving two vehicles and a tractor-trailer truck.

Southaven Police say the accident took place just before 11:15 a.m. on I-55 at the Horn Lake Creek bridge. The bridge was struck and the tractor-trailer flipped over on its side.

Police say there were no injuries but the collision forced the closure of the interstate, which is now closed between Stateline Road and Church Road.

Hazmat crews are in the process of removing the tractor-trailer truck.

Drivers who would normally use the roadway are reminded to use an alternate route.

  • I witnessed the accident. I was driving directly behind the semi in the left lane. The white car came from behind on the shoulder to the right of the semi. The driver cut in to soon trying to avoid the bridge rails which caused the accident. I was able to stop my car, but was afraid the white car was going to skid back on me. Fortunately it didn’t. For the record, it was no fault of the semi driver.
