The Southaven Fire Department announced the promotion of Rick Carpenter to deputy chief, saying he will oversee departmental operations and provide strategic leadership.

Major Swan and Detective Chase will compete at the National LawFit Challenge, the organization that announced their entry said. Supporters said they will be cheered on as they face top law enforcement competitors.

A traffic update said the stretch was closed for an accident investigation but has since reopened; motorists were advised to use alternate routes.

The City of Southaven says Hal Guthrie Park received new playground equipment, a walking trail and a pavilion under the Parks Enhancement Project. The park is named for Army veteran Hal Guthrie Sr., the city said.

The Southaven Chamber will recognize the Southaven Chamber Foundation’s Bridge Academy Class of 2026 at its August Quarterly Luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 19, the chamber said. DeSoto County Schools Superintendent Cory Uselton is slated to be the keynote speaker.
