Walls State Auditor Investigation Opened Amid Data Center Fight

Mississippi State Auditor Shad White’s office has opened a Walls state auditor investigation, White confirmed on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The news comes as the small northwest DeSoto County town has spent weeks in a heated debate over growth, rezoning and the possibility of a data center.

White confirmed the probe in a text message to the Daily Memphian, which first reported it Wednesday evening. “We are aware of the allegations and have started our process, but we do not comment on the status of any investigation,” White said.

What Is Known About the Walls State Auditor Investigation

Few details have been released. As of Wednesday evening, it was not clear:

  • what allegations led the auditor’s office to act,
  • who made the allegations, or
  • which town offices, funds or decisions are being reviewed.

The Daily Memphian’s report did not include comment from Walls town officials. An investigation by the auditor’s office is not a finding of wrongdoing, and no one has been charged in connection with it.

The Office of the State Auditor looks into possible fraud and misuse of public money and property by state agencies and local governments, including cities and towns. Its investigations can lead to demands that money be repaid. In some cases, findings are referred to prosecutors.

A Town Divided Over Growth and Data Centers

The investigation comes during one of the most contentious stretches in recent Walls history. The debate began this fall over a proposal to change how a large tract of farmland could be used:

  • Sept. 22: The Walls Planning Commission voted against a request to rezone about 1,200 acres from agricultural to industrial use. Opponents feared the change could open the door to a data center similar to the SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) facilities in nearby Southaven.
  • Oct. 12: At the first of several community listening sessions called by Mayor Keidron Henderson, residents pressed town leaders for more transparency about development plans.
  • Oct. 19: Two more sessions were held. Henderson told residents that a data center could bring a significant economic boost and asked that the debate stay respectful.
  • Oct. 24: The town held its final scheduled listening session.

Henderson has said that no data center developer has approached the town and that Walls has no current plans for a data center. Many residents have stayed skeptical, citing environmental concerns and worries about rapid development.

What Happens Next

The auditor’s office typically does not discuss open cases, so updates may be slow. When an investigation ends, the office may issue a demand letter, refer a case for prosecution, or close the matter without action.

Anyone with information about possible misuse of public funds in any Mississippi government can contact the Office of the State Auditor’s fraud hotline at 1-800-321-1275 or report it online at osa.ms.gov.
