Stay Safe While Cooking This Thanksgiving, Fire Officials Warn
JACKSON, Miss. — As families across Mississippi prepare for Thanksgiving gatherings, state fire officials are urging residents to stay vigilant in the kitchen. At last check, 60 fire-related deaths have been reported statewide in 2025, with four linked directly to cooking or misuse of cooking equipment.
“Many people have family and friends over for the holiday. Don’t let distractions put you and your guests in danger,” said State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney. “Make your home safer by installing multiple smoke alarms. If you have to leave the kitchen for even a short amount of time, turn off the stove.”

- Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby. Never use water on grease fires.
- When using propane fryers, ensure the hose is at least 6 feet long to keep the tank away from flames.
