Omicron now dominates U.S. COVID-19 new cases

In the weekend update of coronavirus cases in DeSoto County and the state of Mississippi, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported 1,434 new cases and 10 additional deaths related to the virus. 

That brings the number of cases in Mississippi to 523,889 during the pandemic and the total number of deaths to 10,364. 

Two of the additional death reports over the weekend came from DeSoto County, according to the MSDH. 

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Monday announced that Omicron has become the dominant variant of coronavirus, surpassing the Delta variant form.  The CDC says 73 percent of the nation’s new COVID-19 cases are now of the Omicron variant variety.
