K-9 Officer Shot and Killed at Marshall County Correctional Facility
Authorities are investigating after a K-9 officer was shot and killed while on duty at the Marshall County Correctional Facility.
According to prison officials, K-9 Officer Floki was found fatally wounded Thursday morning. Investigators believe the dog was shot around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday while patrolling the facility’s back perimeter, where K-9 units are used to help prevent contraband from entering the prison.
K-9 Commander Josh Russell discovered Floki when he went to retrieve the dog for food and water.
Floki served as a multipurpose K-9, assisting with tracking, narcotics detection, and other law enforcement duties.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the case alongside the Holly Springs Police Department and the facility’s Corrections Investigation Division.
Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain has announced a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
“It’s a shame to kill a defenseless dog who was doing his job,” Cain said.
Officials emphasized that killing a public service animal is a felony in Mississippi, punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Marshall County Correctional Facility Superintendent Frank Caswell or the facility’s CID at 662-252-7111.
