Denise Jones Gregory named next Jackson State president

Denise Jones Gregory, who has been the interim president of Jackson State University since May, will assume the permanent role.
The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning’s Board of Trustees announced Thursday that it selected Jones Gregory to be Jackson State’s 14th president.
Jones Gregory was among 79 applicants for the position, according to a news release from IHL. She was also among the first round interviews of eight candidates and second round interviews of three candidates, and detailed background and references checks conducted by AGB Search consultants.
The IHL board would not release information about the number of applications or finalists before it announced Gregory’s selection.
In December, the IHL board voted to waive part of a policy that would prevent an interim president from applying for the permanent position at the institution they lead. The waiver only applied to the JSU president search.
Without the waiver, if Jones Gregory wanted to apply for the permanent role as president, she would have had to first step down from the interim position.
Jones Gregory graduated magna cum laude — with high honors — from Jackson State in 1994, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, according to the news release. She also earned a doctorate in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
