Corey Wiggins named president of Tougaloo College
Corey Wiggins, a Hazlehurst native and federal co-chair of the Delta Regional Authority, will become the next president of Tougaloo College on July 1. He will be the 15th president in the college’s 157-year history, succeeding Donzell Lee.
The college’s Board of Trustees appointed Wiggins on Friday following a yearlong national search, according to a news release. Board chair Blondean Y. Davis praised Wiggins as a “visionary leader” whose dedication to academic excellence and student success aligns with the college’s historic mission. The board expressed confidence in his leadership to guide the institution into its next phase of growth and impact.
In his current role, Wiggins oversees an independent federal agency that supports economic development across 255 counties and parishes in eight states throughout the Mississippi Delta and Alabama Black Belt. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Alcorn State University. Wiggins has also held faculty positions at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson State University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, teaching courses on health policy, strategic management, and social determinants of health.
