Blueberry becomes official state fruit of Mississippi

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, on Monday, March 13, signed House Bill 1027 which designates the blueberry as the official state fruit of Mississippi.

A group of fourth grade Mannsdale Upper Elementary School students led the way on this issue as a result of a school project. They researched the fruit, lobbied representatives, and joined Governor Reeves for the bill signing at the capitol alongside the bill’s author, Rep. Jill Ford.

“I was happy to sign this legislation into law. This is all thanks to the initiative of these great Mannsdale Upper Elementary School students,” said Gov. Reeves. “I’m very proud of their efforts leading the way on this issue and rallying the legislature to their cause. I enjoyed meeting them at the signing ceremony. They have bright futures ahead of them!”
