Weekend sports: State swim championships, cross country action
PATRIOTS, ROBINSON LEAD COUNTY SWIMMERS AT STATE
Lewisburg scored the best team result from DeSoto County in the MHSAA Class 3 state swim finals, held at the Tupelo Aquatic Center on Friday. Meanwhile, Kaia Robinson of DeSoto Central took home individual championships during the state finals.
The Lewisburg boys finished in fourth place in the state meet with 69 points. The Lewisburg girls were sixth as a team with 32 points, followed in seventh place with 18 points. Madison Central won both team titles.
Robinson, of DeSoto Central, was a state champion in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle. She swam the 100-yard backstroke in 55.85 seconds and the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.63 seconds.
WATSON HIGH SCHOOL CLASSIC CROSS COUNTRY
Cross country teams from DeSoto Central, Lewisburg, Hernando and Olive Branch were involved in the Watson High School Classic cross country meet. The meet was held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, the same course where the MHSAA state meet will take place for 6A and 7A on Nov. 2
In the boys’ division, Trace Thornhill of Hernando had the best finish among county runners, finishing the large field in a time of 16:31.90.
DeSoto County meet champion Preston Mundy of Olive Branch led Conquistador runners with a clocking of 16:39.21.
Austin Simpson led DeSoto Central runners with a time of 16:41.40 for the 5,000 meters. Autry Foster paced Lewisburg with a time of 17:11.01.
Sixty-six boys’ teams took part in the meet, which was won by New Orleans Brother Martin. As a team, DeSoto Central was seventh, Hernando took 14th place, Lewisburg was 23rd and Olive Branch was 32nd.
Kaydi Blanchard of Lewisburg led DeSoto County runners in the girls’ race, taking seventh in a time of 19:28.00. Kyleigh Carter led Hernando runners with a time of 19:33.21, Layla McGuire paced runners from DeSoto Central in a time of 19:53.80, and Maykyn Johnson of Olive Branch finished in a time of 22.29.60.
Lewisburg runners were fifth in the girls race, won by Baton Rouge, La. St. Joseph’s, Hernando was 13th, DeSoto Central finished 32nd, and Olive Branch was 48th among 56 girls’ teams who took part.
