Tuesday sports: Lady Gators sweep Grenada in district volleyball match

Aug. 19, 2025 – Lake Cormorant volleyball coach Christina Morgan said she was encouraged by her team’s poise and resilience after a shaky second set Tuesday night, as the Lady Gators rolled to a 3-0 sweep over Grenada in district play.

“We played well for most of the night,” Morgan said. “The second set, we had a lot of hitting errors, but I’m glad they turned that around in the third set and played a good, clean game.”

Morgan rotated several younger players into the lineup, which she said created some hesitation on the floor. Still, she noted the experience will be valuable as the season progresses.

Lake Cormorant opened the night with a dominant 25-7 win in the first set, fueled by early runs and a strong finish capped by a Grenada miscue. The Lady Gators followed with a 25-18 victory in the second set, holding off a late Lady Chargers rally.

The final set was all Lake Cormorant. Behind two-time 6A Miss Volleyball Sofia Gonzalez, who delivered a kill, two aces and a strong service run, the Lady Gators built a commanding 24-3 lead before closing out the match 25-4 on a kill by Ma’Kayla Hill.

Payton Davis and Kelsi Agner added key kills for Lake Cormorant, while Emily Huerta provided an ace during the second set surge.

The victory comes at the start of a grueling stretch for Lake Cormorant, which faces four straight district contests ahead of the Lady Gators. Morgan said her team’s early-season challenges have prepared them for the road ahead.

“Every game matters,” she said. “Our goal is to get better each time we step on the floor and continue working together as a team. If we keep that mentality, we’re just going to be a stronger team as the season progresses.”
