Thursday sports: Northpoint volleyball sweeps Regents
Northpoint Christian defeated Regents School of Oxford in high school volleyball Thursday night 3-0. Set scores for the match were 25-19, 25-19, 25-22.
As the scores noted, it wasn’t easy for the Lady Trojans against the Lions, but a team that may be starting to jell showed it was able to hold off a squad that made Northpoint earn every point.
Here’s a recap of Thursday’s match between Northpoint and Regents School.
Set 1: Northpoint 25, Regents 19
Northpoint took a 5-2 lead to start the set but Regents was able to tie the set at 8-8. The set continued to stay tight until the Lady Trojans took a three-point lead at 15-12. Four of the next five points went to Northpoint and Regents took a timeout, trailing 19-13 in the set. The Lady Trojans came out of the timeout to stretch the lead to 24-15 when Valerie Hurdle scored off a, Regents block attempt. Another Hurdle point off a block won the set for Northpoint 25-19.
Set 2: Northpoint 25, Regents 19
Northpoint opened the second set strong, posting a 5-1 lead followed by a 10-4 lead. The lead grew to 10 points at 15-5 when Regents started a small rally, cutting the deficit to 21-15. A Regents volley into the net put Northpoint to set point and the Lady Trojans went from there to win the set 25-19.
Set 3: Northpoint 25, Regents 22
The set started in favor of the Lions, which scored the first four points of the set and held a 10-5 lead when a Northpoint volley went into the net. However, the Lady Trojans would start a comeback, culminated by a kill to tie the set at 16-16. The set remained tight after that, with Regents forcing a Northpoint timeout at 18-16, but the lead never grew more than that until the very end. This would be the match point for Northpoint, winning the set 25-22.
