The Northpoint Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated MASE (Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering) 44-22 during the second day of the Fayette Academy Christmas Classic. The Lady Trojans’ second victory in the classic came with 12 points from Nailah Herrera and 10 more from Lillie Milligan.
Northpoint took control of the contest from the start, leading 10-5 after one quarter, with Sara Jane Stroud scoring all six of her points in the game in the opening quarter. The Lady Trojans continued the offensive surge in the second quarter, opening up a 19-6 bulge with 5:17 left in the half and finishing the half ahead 26-10. Herrera scored eight points in the quarter, including a three-pointer for the Lady Trojans.
Milligan’s offense came to life in the third quarter, knocking down a pair of three-point shots and adding a free throw as the Lady Trojans enjoyed a 39-14 lead going into the final eight minutes of the contest.
Northpoint coach Barry Gray liked the balanced offense he’s seen from his team, both Saturday and for the season.
“We’ve had five different leading scorers this year and I like that,” Gray said. “We can shoot the three a little better than we did last year and I think we’re more balanced.”
MASE was led by Akira Mattison with 11 and London Dyson added 10 more.
(B) Brighton, Tenn. 59, Northpoint Christian 36: Beset by bad shooting luck the entire contest, the Northpoint boys’ basketball fell to a Brighton Cardinals team that knocked off the Trojans 71-51 earlier in December. Saturday’s contest came in Northpoint’s second game at the Fayette Academy Christmas Classic.
The Cardinals took a 19-6 lead after one quarter raced out to a 21-8 advantage in the first minute of the second quarter of play. The Cardinals lead became 32-9 later in the second quarter and the first half ended with Brighton on top 34-14.
The lead was 46-28 after three quarters as the Cardinals went on to win the game.
Junior Johnson led Brighton in scoring with 17 points, one of three Cardinals in double figures. Jackson Rawls had 10 points to lead the Trojans’ effort in the loss.
