Saturday sports: Lake Cormorant tops the powerlifting world

SPORTS ETC.: One DeSoto County powerlifter took home a MHSAA 6A individual state championship on Friday during the state meet held at Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. Hillary May of Lewisburg won the title in the 97-pound weight division with a total lift of 595 pounds, between squat, bench press, and deadlift.
As a team, Lewisburg had the highest finish among the 6A schools at fifth overall with 16 points. Ocean Springs, at 49, won the team title with 49 points.
In 5A, Gautier was the team champion by a scant two points to Lake Cormorant, 37-35. Hanna Harris of Lake Cormorant did win the MHSAA 5A state individual title at 132 pounds with a lift of 705 total pounds. That was 20 pounds more than Lady Gator teammate Jeanelle Valdez at 685 pounds. Lake Cormorant did have a total of eight competitors who placed in the top five at state.
Saturday, the Lake Cormorant boys’ powerlifting team claimed its second straight state 5A title.
