Saturday sports: Center Hill advances in playoff baseball

The Center Hill Mustangs are moving on in the MHSAA 6A baseball playoffs, completing a three-game series victory over Grenada with a 6-0 shutout victory Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Center Hill advances to play Germantown in Madison Tuesday evening.  

Pitcher Scott Green was stellar on the mound for Center Hill, allowing only a base hit in the fifth inning by the Chargers in the Mustangs’ victory. Green struck out seven Chargers over the seven innings he worked and walked just two.

The Mustangs scored twice in the second inning and broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to clinch the series.  

Ayden and Avery Rodgers each had two runs scored for Center Hill and Houston Green drove in three runs, aided by a double.  

Other DeSoto County teams set for second round action, starting Tuesday, are Lewisburg hosting Clinton, and Hernando hosting DeSoto Central, all in game ones of a best-of-three series.

NORTH HALF TRACK MEET HELD: The MHSAA 6A North Half track championships were held at Clinton High School Saturday with the host Arrows and Lady winning team championships. The Clinton boys scored 157 points to win the title and the girls finished with 230 points to take first place. 

Best DeSoto County finishes from Saturday’s meet came from the DeSoto Central boys, who took fourth overall with 62 points, and the Southaven girls, who finished fourth overall with 58 points.  

Top individual performances Saturday came from freshman Floyd Sinegal of Horn Lake, who won the boys’ 100 meter race in a time of 10.86 seconds; Kylan Overstreet of Southaven, who took the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 15.71 seconds; and Caleb Barrett of DeSoto Central, who won the boys’ 200 meters in a time of 21.75 seconds.  The DeSoto Central 4×100 meter relay team took the title with a time of 42.88 seconds. 

Top finishers from Saturday’s meet advance to the state finals, May 4-6.ย 

SPORTS ETC.: Former Olive Branch High School football standout Jerrick Reed II was selected in Saturday’s portion of the NFL Draft. Reed, who played at Northwest Mississippi Community College and New Mexico after Olive Branch, was chosen by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round.
