April 3, 2025 – Northwest Mississippi Community College has selected John Redman as the next head coach of the men’s basketball program, athletic director Jake Gordon announced Thursday.
Redman joins the Rangers from Delta State University, where he spent the past seven seasons with the Statesmen as the associate head coach for Mike Nienaber’s coaching staff.
“I am proud, honored and humbled to be named the next head coach at Northwest,” Redman said. “To say that I am excited would be an understatement. I want to thank Northwest President Dr. Heindl, Jake Gordon and my wife, Sommer, for their trust in me. I will work extremely hard to make them proud. The MACCC is highly competitive and is undoubtedly one of the best junior college conferences in the country. I look forward to helping Northwest climb back to the top of the MACCC.”
Redman is familiar with Northwest and the rest of the MACCC, as Delta State has signed several former JUCO standouts over the past several years, including former Ranger Darren Davis. A native of Spanish Fort, Ala., Redman joined DSU in August 2018 and most recently helped the Statesmen to a 17-13 finish this season, a 12-10 mark in the Gulf South Conference and the second round of the GSC Tournament in Birmingham.
As part of Nienaber’s staff, Redman has helped Delta State to three winning seasons, including back-to-back 17-win campaigns and a 19-12 overall record in his first season in Cleveland. During the 2018-19 campaign, he also helped the Statesmen to the GSC Final Four, the GSC Championship and a bid into the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Prior to joining Delta State, Redman spent several years coaching at the NAIA level, including a three-year stint at Dalton State College and one season at the University of Mobile. Redman’s coaching start came as a student assistant coach at Spring Hill College from 2009-13.
After earning his bachelor’s degree from SHC, Redman accepted a position at Dalton State ahead of the 2013-14 campaign, playing an instrumental role in starting the Roadrunners’ men’s basketball program. Although not eligible for postseason play, Dalton State finished 26-4 in its first season and the very next year, the program captured the regular season championship in the Southern States Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship and the 2015 NAIA National Championship.
Redman then moved back to Mobile and spent one year as the head boys’ basketball coach at St. Paul’s Episcopal School. He then transitioned back into the college coaching ranks in 2017, joining the University of Mobile staff as an assistant head coach.
“I am very excited for John to come in and lead the Northwest basketball program,” Gordon said. “Coach Redman has great energy, he has won a national championship as an assistant coach and in my opinion, he’s ready to be a head coach.”
In addition to his bachelor’s degree from Spring Hill, Redman also holds a master’s degree from Delta State. He is married to the former Lesley Sommer Boyd of Mobile.
