Northwest begins construction on new baseball facility

Upgrades are in store for the Northwest baseball program, as construction began earlier this week on a new practice facility located behind the bleachers at Jim Miles Field.

Anticipated for completion in spring 2025, the new facility will contain a large covered practice area and multiple storage spaces. Additionally, the building will also house a state-of-the-art locker room for the Rangers, complete with restrooms and showers, along with coaches’ offices and a coaches’ locker room.

“Recruiting-wise, this is going to be a shot in the arm for us,” Northwest head baseball coach Mark Carson said. “More importantly, it’s going to serve its purpose in developing players and providing our guys with a place to develop their skill-set. It’s just going to be a first-class facility with all the bells and whistles, and the things that we need. It will be huge for our recruiting and it will give us one of the nicest facilities in the country.”

Additionally, the indoor practice space will be shared with the Northwest softball program.

“Having this facility will not only give baseball and softball players a place to perfect their skills, but it will also give our coaches another recruiting tool to attract the best student-athletes,” Northwest athletic director Jake Gordon said.

Northwest is coming off the program’s best season since 2007, as the Rangers compiled a 37-17 overall record and peaked at No. 12 in the NJCAA Division II Baseball Rankings. Carson’s squad also posted a 21-7 record in the MACCC, the second-most conference wins recorded in a season, trailing only a 22-2 conference mark set in 1999.

Additionally, the 2024 campaign marked the 17th winning season in 19 years for Carson, and the ninth 30-win campaign since 2007.
