When Super Bowl 59 kicks off on Feb. 9 in New Orleans, Louisiana, a DeSoto County athlete will be on the roster of one of the teams, although he won’t be able to actually play in the game.
Horn Lake’s Nakobe Dean is a third-year linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, the NFC champion who will take the AFC titleist Kansas City Chiefs.
Dean was part of an undefeated 6A state high school championship team at Horn Lake in 2018, followed by a national championship Georgia squad in 2022. He was also the winner of the national Butkus Award in high school and again in college. Dean was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft.
The Super Bowl will not be a game Nakobe will be able to play in, however. A knee injury suffered in the Wild Card round contest with Green Bay has resulted in him ruled out of the remaining playoff games.
Injuries have beset him throughout his career. Dean sustained a foot injury in Week 1 of his second NFL season and was placed on injured reserve. He came back on Oct. 14, went back on injured reserve a month later with a Lisfranc injury.
Back in action this season, Nakobe appeared in 17 games and recorded his first interception in a game against Jacksonville.
In all, six players from Mississippi are on the two rosters of the two teams for the Super Bowl.
