Northpoint Christian School’s Barry Gray has chosen to resign as the head coach of the boys’ basketball team, the school announced on Monday, the school announced on Monday.

In mid-January, Gray, who is also the Northpoint athletic director, approached school administration with plans to step away from shouldering responsibilities for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.  He wanted to give the school ample time to begin planning a viable search that would be in the best interest of the school and the program.  He will remain the head coach of the girls’ basketball team.

Gray began serving as the boys’ coach during the 2017-2018 school year, replacing David Corbett in July 2017. Over the last seven seasons, Gray has served as both the head coach of the boys’ and girls’ teams.  He will continue to serve in his role as the head coach of the girls’ basketball team.

During his tenure as head coach of the boys’ program, he coached the team to an overall record of 113 wins and 78 losses, highlighted by a district championship, regional tournament runner-up, and a state tournament appearance during the 2018-2019 season.

“Coach Gray is the longest-tenured boys’ coach in the history of our school and we thank him for his dedication to the boys’ basketball program over the last seven seasons,” said Northpoint Head of School, Jim Ferguson.

“We have always wanted to lead our players by example teaching them how important it is to not only win games but win at the battle of life through tough discipline, respect for authority, and humility,” Gray said. “We have always tried to teach our players to show respect in attitude and trust in teammates.”

Gray went on to say, “I thank the administration, board, parents, and Northpoint fans for their support.  I also want to offer a special thank you to our coaching staff of Ryan Richardson, Simon Barnett, and Thomas Teed.  Mrs. Lindy Gray, my wife, deserves a special thank you for all her help and encouragement that she has been through the years to teams and most especially, to me.  I also want to thank Coach Richardson for all the many things he has done for us. What a great ride it has been!”
