Friday sports: Region basketball pairings, Lady Jags win state bowling

With the end of the regular season, the seedings and pairings for postseason in high school basketball are starting to come together.  

Region 1-7A schools are playing their postseason tournament at Horn Lake High School this year. The games will determine the four teams from the six-team region that will advance to the MHSAA 7A state championships that start on Feb. 17 and their seeding into the playoffs.  

The schedule for the first round on Monday, Feb. 5 is as follows: 

  • 3 p.m. – (Girls) DeSoto Central vs. Southaven
  • 4:30 p.m. – (Boys) Southaven vs DeSoto Central
  • 6 p.m. – (Girls) Oxford vs. Horn Lake
  • 7:30 p.m. – (Boys) Horn Lake vs. Hernando 

The schedule for the second round on Wednesday, Feb. 7 is as follows:

  • 3 p.m. – (Girls) Lewisburg vs. Horn Lake/Oxford winner
  • 4:30 p.m. – (Boys) Oxford vs. Horn Lake/Hernando winner
  • 6 p.m. – (Girls) Hernando vs. Southaven/DeSoto Central winner
  • 7:30 p.m. – (Boys) Lewisburg vs. Southaven/DeSoto Central winner

Note: Region 1-6A is being played in Grenada for the teams that include Olive Branch, Center Hill and Lake Cormorant. A coaches meeting Saturday was being held to determine seeding and scheduling of the games.

DeSoto Central wins the Class III state girls bowling championship. 

Lewisburg was second among boys’ bowlers, losing to state champion Northwest Rankin 4,210-4,200
