HERNANDO, Miss. (Aug. 29, 2025) – The Hernando Tigers opened their season — and christened their new high school football field — with a commanding 48-0 victory over Overton of Memphis on Friday night.
The Tigers wasted no time setting the tone, racing to a 21-0 first-quarter lead. Brady Clancy broke through with a 14-yard touchdown run, followed by Shawn Scott’s 10-yard return of a blocked punt into the end zone. Sophomore quarterback Asher Lawson capped the early surge with a 1-yard scoring run.
Hernando’s offense stayed hot in the second quarter. Lawson connected with Cooper Lankford on a 13-yard touchdown pass before Dallas Wooten added a 3-yard scoring run, pushing the Tigers ahead 35-0 with 8:21 left in the half. That margin triggered the mercy rule, with the clock running continuously outside of timeouts or injuries.
The Tigers added two more scores in the second half. Lawson punched in a touchdown with a 1-yard run in the third quarter, and reserve running back Caiden Maxwell sealed the night with a 7-yard scoring run in the fourth.
While the offense showcased balance and depth, Hernando’s defense was equally dominant, keeping the visiting Wolverines bottled up throughout the contest and denying them any chance to build momentum.
With the win, Hernando improves to 1-0 and will host Ridgeway of Memphis next Friday. Ridgeway opened its season with a loss to Overton the previous week.
