Carter, Thornhill win Mustang Stampede 5Ks; Lewisburg tops Hernando in volleyball

Hernando's Kyleigh Carter and Trace Thornhill won the large-school varsity 5K races at Center Hill's Mustang Stampede on Saturday, Sept. 26. Lewisburg also beat Hernando 2-1 in a late county volleyball tournament match. The completed race results and volleyball final capped a busy Saturday for county teams.
Cross country
Carter won the girls' 4A-7A race in 19 minutes, 14.08 seconds, beating the meet's listed large-school girls course record of 19:15.42 by 1.34 seconds. Teammates Abby White (20:29.13) and Grey Weiss (20:52.13) placed third and fourth. Center Hill's Joan Shetler took fifth in 20:57.45, with teammate Areej Saleh sixth in 21:11.91. Lewisburg's Avery Sawyer was 10th in 22:30.74, and Horn Lake's top finisher, Montreanna Pimpton, was 33rd in 26:13.88. Hernando placed five runners in the top eight, while Lewisburg's first five finished between 10th and 21st.
Thornhill led the boys' 4A-7A field in 15:43.48. Center Hill's Christopher Crockett finished second in 16:37.46, and teammate Lucas Roberson was fifth in 17:38.86. Hernando's Dixon Alderman placed seventh in 17:43.95, with Nathan Jenkins 10th in 17:57.70. Lewisburg's Brandon Sanders was 13th in 18:08.98; Horn Lake's Isaac Jimenez was 48th in 20:57.36. County runners took four of the first seven places.
Volleyball
Lewisburg beat Center Hill 25-13, 25-12, then edged Hernando 2-1 in a later tournament match. Hernando had won four straight two-set matches earlier in the day, defeating Lake Cormorant, Southaven, DeSoto Central and Center Hill. The Tigers beat Lake Cormorant 25-20, 25-17 and Southaven 25-14, 25-21. Against DeSoto Central, they survived 26-24 and 31-29 sets; Isabella Weitzeil was credited with six kills and six blocks in that match.
Center Hill also swept Horn Lake 2-0 and beat Olive Branch 25-21, 25-23 before its losses to Lewisburg and Hernando. DeSoto Central swept Lake Cormorant 25-16, 25-20 before falling to Hernando. Lake Cormorant responded with a 25-17, 25-18 win over Southaven; K. Stevens had eight kills in that match. Southaven also lost 2-0 to Hernando.
