World Autism Day
Apr 2, 2025- You may see a little more than the normal amount of blue being worn today as World Autism Day is being observed. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It aims to foster understanding, acceptance, and support for individuals with autism.It also focuses on advocating for the rights and well-being of people on the autism spectrum. Blue is the color associated with support of people with the autism spectrum disorder.
The United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007. The day is also part of Autism Awareness Month.
This year’s theme for World Autism Day is “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” This theme highlights the importance of inclusivity and aligning autism advocacy with broader global development goals.
“Light It Up Blue” is a common campaign where landmarks around the world are illuminated in blue to show support for autism awareness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States today. On average, autism is diagnosed around age 5 in the U.S., with signs appearing by age 2 or 3.
