White comments further on Crime Stoppers audit

HERNANDO, Miss. – Mississippi State Auditor Shad White, while speaking at an event in Hernando Thursday, highlighted a recent state audit indicating that DeSoto County Crime Stoppers Inc. spent nearly $400,000 with no documentation showing the funds were used to pay for crime tips.

The report, released earlier by the State Auditor’s office, found that $389,000 in expenditures from the nonprofit organization’s bank accounts lacked the required invoices or documentation.

According to the audit, there were no records to validate that the spending was for its stated purpose of rewarding anonymous tips that help law enforcement solve crimes.

“To see this amount of money spent without a single documented tip is deeply concerning,” White stated during his comments. “Crime Stoppers organizations rely on public trust and donations, and that trust requires accountability.”

The audit examined the organization’s financial activity over several years. Crime Stoppers organizations typically operate as independent nonprofits that raise funds to offer cash rewards for information.

The State Auditor’s report has been forwarded to relevant authorities for further review. White’s report may reviewed further here:
