There’s more to pumpkins than meets the eye

By Emilie Michael, DeSoto Civic Garden Club

Pumpkins are a mainstay of Halloween and Thanksgiving. A pumpkin is actually a type of winter squash and is often used to carve Jack-O’-Lanterns at Halloween and made into pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving. However, there are other ways to use them as well.

DeSoto Civic Garden Club members met at the M.R. Davis Library for their October meeting and after their business meeting, created floral pumpkins and a beautiful fall floral arrangement to be enjoyed by the residents of Diversicare, a local nursing home. Using a variety of dried and pressed flowers, leaves and foliage and additional accessories, each of the 22 pumpkins were unique and eye-catching and sure to bring a smile to all.

This is the time of year to have fun, do the carvings and create your own masterpieces.
