Southaven aldermen meeting highlights
Aug. 6, 2025 – Southaven was honored Tuesday night during the Board of Aldermen meeting as Atmos Energy presented the Gold Cup of Safe Digging Award, recognizing the city for its commitment to safety by consistently calling 811 before excavation projects to protect utility lines.
In other business:
- The Southaven Police Department received approval to apply for the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program, a step aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure and protecting sensitive data.
- The Southaven Fire Department renewed its partnership with DeSoto County Schools Career and Technology Center West, continuing its role as a clinical site where students can gain real-world experience by shadowing paramedics and EMTs.
Planning & Development
The board approved a subdivision request for Drive Max to combine two lots on the west side of Highway 51, north of Brookhaven. The project is part of the West End tax incentive program and aims to spur improvements in the area.
Mayor’s Report Highlights:
- Snowden Grove Tennis Center is currently hosting a professional tennis tournament, featuring 120 players from 26 countries.
- xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, has selected Southaven as its newest operations site.
- The mayor announced plans to recommend a millage rate reduction to help counterbalance increased property taxes following a reassessment by the Mississippi Department of Revenue. Additional details about the reassessment are available on the DeSoto County website.
