New charges in ongoing crimes against children investigation

Aug. 6, 2025 – A 59-year-old Southaven man is back behind bars, now facing additional and more serious charges involving crimes against children under the age of 14.

John W. Pummill was arrested again on August 6, following a deeper investigation by the Southaven Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. He is now charged with statutory rape, statutory rape of a child under 14, and rape. Authorities say these new charges stem from an older investigation dating back several years.

Pummill was previously arrested on July 17 after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led investigators to explicit images involving minors. That initial tip prompted Southaven Police to arrest Pummill and charge him with possession of child exploitation material.

The Southaven Police Department emphasized that Pummill’s latest arrest should serve as a reminder of the department’s commitment to standing with victims and ensuring justice is served.

“The Special Victims Unit encourages victims of sexual assault to use their voice and be heard,” the department stated. “Reporting a crime may prevent others from being harmed or inspire others who may be afraid to come forward.”

Police officials reiterated their mission to keep Southaven a safe place to live, work, and visit, promising continued vigilance in protecting the most vulnerable members of the community.
