Senatobia Officer Who Shot 1-Year-Old Kohen Wiley Resigns; Interim Chief Also Steps Down
Senatobia police officer Hunter Foster, who fatally shot 1-year-old Kohen Wiley in a Walmart parking lot in June, has resigned from the department.
The Senatobia Board of Aldermen accepted Foster’s resignation Oct. 21, effective immediately, with public confirmation coming Friday from Mayor Greg Graves. Foster’s attorney, Martin Zummach, said Foster resigned “for the good of the city and the police department.”
Interim Police Chief Angelica Maze has also stepped down from the interim role, though she is staying with the department in a different capacity. Maze took over as interim chief after former Chief Harold Vanderford was fired Sept. 1.
The resignations come days after Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office announced Oct. 19 that its review found Foster’s use of force justified in the June 14 shooting, which happened during a reported shoplifting call at the Walmart on U.S. 51 in Senatobia. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety released body-camera footage of the incident Oct. 22.
Wiley’s family, represented by attorney Ben Crump, disputes the official account of the shooting and is calling for a U.S. Department of Justice investigation, saying resignation is not accountability.
