School board meets, approves bids for roofing work

The DeSoto County School District (DCS) Board of Education on a number of items in a relatively short, 20 minute-long recessed meeting in Hernando Thursday morning.

The board awarded Eskola LLC the bid for re-roofing work at Southaven Intermediate School and awarded B Four Plied Inc. the bid for re-roofing work at Walls Elementary School.

The district will be advertising to receive bids for Low Voltage and Telephone System Upgrades in the Central Services building in Hernando, as well as bids for Special Education playground improvements at Lewisburg Intermediate and Southaven Elementary schools.

Supt. Cory Uselton reported that early school attendance figures are just under last year’s 34,490 figure, so he expects the final figure to remain in that range, possibly dropping to near 34,300 or rise to about 34,600 students in the state’s largest school district. Jackson Public Schools is the second-largest district in the state but still has about 15,000 fewer students than in DeSoto County Schools.
