Republicans hear from former state representative
Feb 28, 2025- Former state Rep. Nick Bain (R-Corinth) recently appeared at the DeSoto County Republican Club meeting at the Hernando Golf and Racquet Club in Hernando.
At his appearance, Bain spoke about immigration, DEI issues and the America First mentality currently pursued by the Trump administration. He said he noticed a difference in his audience between an earlier appearance in July 2024 during the presidential campaign and his return to the group in February.
“People were not only ready for a change but were thirsting for it,” Bain said. “A return to common sense, good government, and accountability was welcomed by the people in that room, but also there was a sense of accomplishment. People were proud to say, ‘I voted for change!’ or ‘That’s my president in the White House!’”
Bain also said the most impressive quality that was visible to him that night was seeing a community with a renewed determination to move forward together. He believes the DeSoto County current legislative representation in the state House of Representatives is moving into respected leadership positions.
“DeSoto County has the ability to be a juggernaut in Mississippi politics,” Bain said. “Potentially one-tenth of statewide GOP primary voters could come from DeSoto County. With that much stroke a unified DeSoto County can steer the direction of our beloved state.”
Bain was first elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2011, then became a Republican in 2019. He introduced legislation in 2013 mandating speech impediment screenings for all Mississippi children, inspired by his own experiences with a speech disorder during childhood.
Six years later, Bain’s move to the Republican Party was in part due to a desire to be more involved in policy making, but did receive push back for supporting the move from the Confederate-themed state flag to the current state flag. He attributed the flag vote, but defended his support of the flag change, when he was defeated by Brad Mattox in the 2023 Republican primary runoff.
Bain’s legislative decisions occasionally sparked controversy. Notably, his 2020 vote to retire Mississippi’s Confederate-themed state flag led to criticism from some constituents. In the 2023 Republican primary runoff, Bain was defeated by challenger Brad Mattox by a margin of 26 votes.
Reflecting on his loss, Bain attributed it to his flag vote but maintained that he would make the same decision again, believing it was the right course of action.
Bain lives with his wife and family in Corinth, where he remains active in community and church activities.
