New signals erected to improve traffic flow
Sept. 18, 2024 – Three new traffic signals are either active or about to go active in Southaven, Mayor Darren Musselwhite said on his Mayor’s Report blog this week.
The three intersections are at Church and Tchulahoma, Stateline and Swinnea, and at Guthrie and Airways Blvd.
“Tchulahoma and Church’s new signals are now functional allowing safe flow onto a very busy Church Road and removing dangerous, unsignaled left turns,” Musselwhite wrote. “Sacred Heart School traffic flow will also be greatly improved here.”
The mayor said the new traffic signals at Swinnea and Stateline will more safely allow traffic to move from Swinnea onto Stateline.
The signal at Guthrie and Airways is north of what Musselwhite said is one of the busiest intersections in the state at Goodman and Airways.
“This intersection is so close to Goodman Road that we cautiously considered the impact a signal would have to Airways north-south flows, in general, but the dangers of Guthrie drivers attempting turns here has outweighed the prior concerns and the new signals now functioning will improve safety tremendously here,” Musselwhite said.
Musselwhite also credited state Sens. Kevin Blackwell (R-Southaven) and Dr. David Parker (R-Olive Branch) for their work in achieving state transportation funding for the projects.
