National Night Out kickoff event set for Horn Lake

Horn Lake is hosting a National Night Out kickoff event on July 30 at Latimer Lakes Park in an effort to promote safe neighborhoods and a better police-community relationship.  Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. that day.

National Night Out is actually held on the first Tuesday of August nationwide. Organizers hold National Night Out to promote efforts for people to get to know their neighbors, police and community leaders better.

Bettie Young with Horn Lake Neighborhood Watch and wife of Horn Lake alderman Dave Young, is helping organize the city get-together that evening.

In writing to the Board of Aldermen recently, Young said, “I am sure you will agree with me that in the age we live in, no one communicates face to face anymore for the most part.  We all were brought up in an era where we did not have cell phones, laptops, tablets, or social media.”

The Horn Lake event will be free of charge to attend. The Neighborhood Watch group will raise funds through the sale of hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink.

“This campaign promotes community-building for our law enforcement and emergency departments, but it also means our city leaders and our city departments,” said Young. orhoods
