Jan. 8, 2025-We now know that three of the current city mayors in DeSoto County want to continue leading their communities.

Ken Adams already has declared for reelection to lead the City of Olive Branch and Chip Johnson informed DeSoto County News that he had signed his papers at 8 a.m. Jan. 2 to be put on the ballot for reelection as Mayor in Hernando.

Today, Darren Musselwhite revealed on social media that is running for another term as Mayor of Southaven. Musselwhite went right to the point in his announcement, as he stated it had been an honor to serve the city for the past 12 years.

That means only Horn Lake will have a new face in the Mayor’s Office come July 1. At least three candidates have stepped forward to replace the retiring Allen Latimer and two of them will face off in a primary on April 1.

The qualifying deadline for candidates is Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. The primary election day is April 1 and if there are any runoff elections needed, that will occur on April 22.  General election day for aldermen and for mayor is on June 3 and the Secretary of State’s office notes that general elections are determined by plurality. That means the winner needs only to earn the most votes and not need to have the 50 percent plus one vote majority.
